Stand behind The Yellow Line…
… until it starts to fade…
There is currently a ridiculous scenario engulfing Britain’s railways, in particular affecting services in and out of London. You can read about in online, but suffice to say things are bad. It’s basically a lottery whether the train advertised as running on the timetable is running at all, never mind being vaguely on time. All this means that trains which are running are invariably packed with weary commuters, and at connecting stations (like London Blackfriars, for example) there are tremendous swathes of travellers hurrying to get from Overground to Underground, and vice versa. This cityscape is an attempt to capture this movement, and is a view of the shiny concourse between up and below at Blackfriars at a time which wouldn’t normally be classed a ‘rush hour’ but, because of the situation outlined previously, is just as busy. I have used Copic Cool Greys for the metallic structures and Warm Greys for the floor. I have also used Prussian Blue for flashes of the trim used on the station windows and also in places inside…
Finally, I had a plethora of figures and stances to choose from. I had positioned myself in a place where the majority of travellers are moving from up on the overground, behind me on my right, toward the gates to go underground, or to exit the station, at the end on my left. There would also be the opposite movements (less so, as this was a morning capture) and also the confused tourists, looking for Tate Modern and the South Bank… this cityscape hopefully reflects the organised chaos passengers have had to endure for weeks now…
